Nepal's Journey to Democracy and Economic Prosperity

A conversation with

The Rt. Hon. Mr. K P Sharma Oli
Prime Minister of Nepal

and

Jenik Radon
Adjunct Professor of International and Public Affairs

Welcome by:
Angela V. Olinto
Provost of Columbia University in the City of New York

A decade-long armed conflict ended in 2006 with the restoration of democracy and the consolidation of democratic norms and values, such as the rule of law, human rights, good governance, press freedom, inclusiveness, gender equality, and social justice. In 2008, Nepal was declared a Federal Democratic Republic, abolishing the 240-year-old monarchy. Through the inclusive and progressive constitution of 2015, Nepal is now focused on the long-term goal of ‘Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali.’ K P Sharma Oli, who is now serving his third term as Prime Minister, will recount the country’s struggle for democracy, share his vision of Nepal’s journey to achieve economic prosperity, and the challenges ahead.

Columbia University students are invited to participate in a moderated question and answer session.

This program is cosponsored by the South Asia Institute.
